Diet đĽ, Training đď¸ââď¸, Where Do I Begin đ¤Ż?!
Youâve decided itâs time to get serious about your health and fitness goals.
Maybe things in life have settled down and youâre ready to prioritize something new. OR you took some pictures at a family gathering and thought to yourself, âIs this really what I look likeâ? You might have pulled out your trusty âgo toâ pair of jeans đ that used to fit just right and now feel a little snug. Or donât even make it over your thighs (it happens).
Either way, youâre ready to make a change.
So you do what everyone does.
You go on Instagram or TikTok for some fitness inspiration.
Or better yet, you Google, âBest way to lose weightâ.
And the onslaught begins.
You get bombarded with so called âexpertsâ telling you what worked for them and why you should drop everything youâre doing and invest in their programs.
Keto
Intermittent Fasting
Atkins
The Fruit Diet
V-Shred
Juice Fasts
Detoxes and Cleanses
Ten minute workouts
Cut gluten
Donât eat sugar
Kelly the 20 year old telling you how she âkeeps it tightâ by using her booty bands and whatever drink mix sheâs getting paid to sell you (when she isnât even using that stuff herself, but thatâs a story for another time đ)
Youâre overwhelmed and itâs only been 10 minutes âąď¸. The transformation pictures you see are just too good to be true, but you buy into it because youâre desperate and will do anything to feel better and get the results youâre craving.
The money is spent, you get the e-book or whatever kit was recommended and youâre excited to start.
Thereâs a diet plan filled with all the foods you should and shouldnât eat and in what quantities.
The workout routine seems clear with tons of cardio, circuits, weight lifting, bands, etc.
How many glasses of water you should drink a day and what supplements you should take.
Itâs perfect. After all, you just need someone to tell you what to do and youâll do it, right?
Monday comes and you begin your new routine.
You start getting up at 5am (when you normally wake up at 7am and even thatâs a struggle) because âfit peopleâ get it done early. This time, thatâs going to be you.
You drag yourself to the gym.
Go crazy on all the cardio đââď¸and weight lifting đď¸ââď¸ that was recommended. You have no idea if youâre doing it right. It burns, everything hurts and youâre dying so it must be working, obviously.
You get home and guzzle down your green âenergy boosting, fat burning, muscle buildingâ drink that was recommended as part of your diet routine that âguaranteed resultsâ.
Youâre feeling accomplished. You are ABSOLUTELY going to crush it this time.
You go about your day and then soreness starts to set in.
You ate healthy for breakfast and lunch but now the 3pm crash is starting to creep in and you just want the comfort foods you usually turn to at this time.
NOPE, youâre not gonna give in. After all, those forbidden treats are NOT on your program. If you want this bad enough youâll just have to try harder.
You make it home and choke down the chicken đ salad 𼏠you prepped the night before. The hunger is not at all satisfied so you just go to bed so you donât have to think about it. Or hey, now is a good time to implement the âdrink water if you feel hungry cause youâre actually just thirstyâ rule youâve been reading about.
And you get up and do this every day, completely exhausted and depleted, until Friday. Just to step on the scale to see youâve lost one pound. Or worse, gained two. The only explanation being you need to push harder next week.
Now the weekend hits and thereâs parties, food, and fun waiting for you. You worked hard all week, youâre exhausted and deserve to splurge, right? Youâll get back at it strong on Monday for sureâŚ
And the cycle continues.
Does this sound familiar?
What if I told you that the health and fitness industry makes money off your desperation and insecurities and uses your pain as a way for them to get rich? đ¤
I hope that makes you as angry as it makes me.
Now, hereâs the thing, all the methods I listed above actually work (well, minus Kelly and her booty bands) because they all create some type of energy deficit. Thatâs how you lose weight, eat less than your body burns. Itâs science. But they donât take one of the biggest factors into considerationâŚ
YOU!!
These fads don't look at your life, lifestyle, things you enjoy and find pleasurable or things you absolutely canât stand. Itâs a âone size fits allâ approach and It doesnât speak to or consider what encourages, drives, motivates and empowers YOU.
SoâŚ
What SHOULD you do?
Simple.
Start small, one step at a time.
Begin with what you feel you can control and be the MOST CONSISTENT with.
Does working out seem like the least intimidating thing for you? Letâs start there. Join a gym, hire a personal trainer, go to a yoga class. Whatever interests you that you ENJOY.
Listen, working out should NEVER involve doing something you HATE.
Meal plans? You should NEVER feel like you have to cut out foods that you love.
If you enjoy it, youâll do it. If you hate it, you wonât.
The ULTIMATE goal is CONSISTENCY. Do you hate burpees? Does your body hurt every time youâre done with a HIIT class? Do you feel so tired you canât get off the couch for 3 hours after a workout?
Then that is NOT the routine for you.
Well, how about weight lifting? Yoga đ§đžââď¸? Walking? Do you feel AMAZING after you do those things?
Yep, you just found your new workout routine. Things that refresh and energize you.
This is your base.
HERE is where youâll begin and build everything else up from there.
How many days a week feel comfortable for you? Once, twice?
BAM đĽâŚ.start there.
Be consistent with that every week. IF and WHEN youâre ready for more, add it in. But youâll always have your foundation of twice a week that you can SUSTAIN.
The same principle applies to your diet.
If you literally gag at the thought of raw spinach and kale salads with dry chicken, or a roasted sweet potato, broccoli and a turkey burger makes you sad for life thenâŚ
That is NOT the diet for you!
How do you like roasted salmon with risotto on the side? Or maybe ground beef hard shell tacos đŽ with a side of guac? Does that sounds amazing?
Then THESE are the foods you should focus on eating. I know, it sounds TOO good to be true. Youâre probably thinking, Dani, so youâre trying to tell me I can do a workout I enjoy AND eat delicious foods while also losing weight?
YesâŚthat is exactly what Iâm saying. â¨You just have a hard time believing it because your whole life youâve been sold a lie that pain and suffering is the only way to succeed.
Itâs not.
You can thrive while enjoying the journey.
It truly is the ONLY way to success.
